Pahalgam terror attack: India's tough response and future strategy

Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir – The horrific terrorist attack on 22 April at Pahalgam, a famous tourist destination in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, has shocked the entire country. So far 28 innocent people have died in this attack and many are seriously injured. According to reports, the terrorists identified the tourists on the basis of religion and then opened fire on them. This barbaric attack has been strongly condemned by the whole world including India.

Soon after the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a meeting of the high-level Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) as soon as he returned from his visit to Saudi Arabia. The meeting was attended by Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and senior officials of various security agencies. After this important meeting, India has taken five historic and decisive steps, which were announced by India's Deputy National Security Advisor Vikram Misri.

Five major decisions of the Indian government

Indus Water Treaty suspended

India has suspended the Indus Water Treaty, signed between India and Pakistan in 1960 with the mediation of the World Bank, with immediate effect. This water-sharing agreement, which has been in place for decades, is now being considered a step towards ending it by India, which could lead to a severe water crisis for Pakistan.

Attari-Wagah border sealed

India has closed the only active border it has with Pakistan—the Attari-Wagah border. Pakistani citizens who have already come on visa have been instructed to leave India by May 1, 2025.

SVES visa exemption ended

The SVES visa exemption given to SAARC countries has been canceled for Pakistani citizens. Pakistani citizens who are already in India on this visa have been asked to leave the country within 48 hours. This visa will not be issued in future until a new policy comes in.

Defence Advisor of Pakistan High Commission declared 'Persona Non Grata'
The Defence Advisor appointed in the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi has been declared persona non grata by the Government of India and has been ordered to leave the country within a week. Also, India has recalled its Defence Advisor and supporting staff from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

The number of employees in the High Commission will be reduced

At present, there are 55 employees working in the High Commissions of both the countries, which will be reduced to 30. There is a plan to reduce it further in the future.

Wide impact of this terrorist attack

This attack not only raises questions on India's internal security but also on regional stability. Protests, candle marches and condolence meetings are being organized across the country. At the international level, many countries including America, Russia, China, France, Germany and Britain have strongly condemned this attack, expressing solidarity with India.

Conclusion

This terrorist attack in Pahalgam is not only the murder of innocents but also an attack on humanity.  The swift and strict action taken by the Indian government in response to this brutal incident clearly shows that India now has a zero tolerance policy towards terrorism. In the coming times, these decisions will not only give a new direction to India-Pakistan relations, but can also have a profound impact on regional geopolitics.
