Terror attack in Pahalgam: 28 pilgrims killed, more than 20 injured — Amit Shah reaches Srinagar, action begins

A horrific terrorist attack took place today in Pahalgam, a famous tourist destination in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, in which 28 pilgrims were killed and more than 20 people were injured. The attack took place when preparations were going on for the Amarnath Yatra. The terrorist organization The Resistance Front (TRF), which is an affiliate of Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack. Immediately after the attack, Home Minister Amit Shah reached Srinagar and reviewed the situation.

Pahalgam : Beautiful but sensitive place in the valley

Pahalgam is a major hill station located in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is located at an altitude of about 2130 meters above sea level and is also an important stop on the Amarnath Yatra. This area is often crowded with tourists and devotees, but unfortunately the eyes of terrorists also remain on it.

 Attack incident

According to eyewitnesses, devotees were enjoying this beautiful place, when terrorists came out of the jungles in army uniform and started firing indiscriminately. The terrorists first asked the religion and then targeted the people. While the atmosphere was joyful till a few moments ago, within a few moments there was screaming and chaos.

After the attack, the terrorists fled through the hills, and by the time the security forces arrived, they had absconded.

Responsibility and suspected organization

The responsibility for this attack has been taken by The Resistance Front (TRF), an organization linked to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba. TRF has been involved in many attacks in the Kashmir Valley in recent years and this attack is being seen as a link in the same.

Response of the Indian Government

Home Minister Amit Shah immediately reached Srinagar and called a review meeting after seeing the seriousness of the incident. He said, "None of the terrorists involved in this brutal attack will be spared, and they will be given the harshest punishment."

 Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi also strongly condemned the attack and said, "The government will have to take strict steps now, only promises will not work."

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and President Draupadi Murmu have also described the attack as an attack on humanity. Incidentally, US Vice President JD Vance was on a visit to India at the time of the attack, which further deepens the suspicion that this attack may be part of a larger international conspiracy.

History and background

This is not the first time that terrorists have attacked before the Amarnath Yatra.

36 Sikhs were killed in 2000.

In 2002, Amarnath pilgrims were attacked in which 11 people were killed.

In 2017, there was an attack in Kulgam, in which 8 pilgrims lost their lives.

India has been a victim of terrorism for decades and such attacks have killed many innocent civilians.

 Conclusion

This terrorist attack in Pahalgam is not just an attack on the pilgrims but also a direct attack on India's security system and religious freedom. While India is strengthening its role on the world stage, such attacks indicate that dealing with internal and external security threats is still the biggest priority.

India will now have to take decisive action not only against terrorist organizations but also build pressure on the international platform so that countries like Pakistan which shelter these organizations can also be held accountable.
